The Brand
Costa Coffee: London, 1971
Everything in this section retells the “about us” page on the chain's official website in Azerbaijan. It's Costa's own story about itself, not an independently verified history.
- 1971
London, Fenchurch Street
Brothers Sergio and Bruno Costa came to London to make good coffee part of everyday life and opened a small roastery.
- 112
Varieties Tested
That's how many varieties the brothers went through before creating the blend they named Moka Italia. It remains the chain's signature blend: arabica and robusta.
- 1978
The Move to Lambeth
Demand grew and the roastery moved to Old Paradise Street in South London. It operated there until 2017.
- 1981
The First Shop
The first Costa café opened on Vauxhall Bridge Road. It was the first place in London to serve espresso and cappuccino in porcelain cups.
- 2017
Basildon, Essex
The new roastery in the county of Essex is one of the largest in Europe: 45 000 tonnes of coffee a year, four times more than the old one.
- 2023
A Darker Roast
Early in the year the chain roasted its signature blend darker: the flavor got richer, but, per Costa's own description, it kept its smoothness.
Beans
Where They Come From
all green beans come from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms and arrive at the port of Tilbury, 14 miles from the roastery
The Moka Italia blend: arabica for smoothness and robusta for strength. That's how the chain itself describes it.
What This Means for a Cup at Sea Breeze
None of this can be checked on site: the guide doesn't know which beans this particular outlet uses or where they're shipped to Baku from. We're retelling what the chain says about itself.
The outlet's signature drinks and their prices are on the menu page.

Nine Outlets on the Chain's List

An Oddity Worth Knowing
The Sea Breeze outlet isn't on this list of branches, even though the same site has a separate “QR Menu SeaBreeze” page for it. No explanation is given.
